It's time for my review of The Pirates of Penzance.
Now this isn't the usual thing I see, a comedic opera, so this was quite an experience for me. I was quite glad I went though because this was hilarious. It is an all-male cast so the men have to dress up as females which was absolutely hysterical. A few of the best cast members for me were Alan Richardson as Mabel, Alex Weatherhill as Ruth, Miles Western as Major-General Stanley, Neil Moors as The Pirate King, Chris Theo Cook as Isabelle, Dale Page as Kate, Ben Irish as Edith and Richard Edwards as Hebe. Alex Weatherhill and Miles Western were both perfect for their roles, I did however feel Samuel Nunn as Frederic wasn't quite right for the role. He was a good singer but really seemed to have difficulty with his acting. He may have just been tired though. Apart from this minor problem the show was great and all of the cast had amazing voices. The dancing was also really good. I really liked the way that the actors entered and sometimes sung while they were in the audience. I thought this was good because by doing this they really engaged with the audience. It was fun when the police-men came through the audience with their torches shining them at the audience. During the police-mens scenes I liked the way they also all held up fake door-handle moustaches. Overall this was a very funny show and advise to anyone who wants a bit of a laugh and likes Gilbert and Sullivan music.
The featured star of The Pirates of Penzance is, drum roll please… ALEX WEATHERHILL!
Alex was by far one of the funniest members of the cast. He made the audience really laugh and at the end of act one made the audience feel very sorry for him.
Now for my final verdict on The Pirates of Penzance. I give the Pirates of Penzance…
This was a very clever, and very funny, adaptation of the original. This is a recommendation to anyone who wants a night of laughter.
